Forsyth County - 39 acres protected
Charles and Jean Taylor. Donation of Conservation Easement.
Charles and Jean Taylor of Winston-Salem donated this 39-acre property bordering the Little Yadkin River in Forsyth County to PLC. The Conservancy will protect this unique Forsyth County property and initially use it as a nature preserve for member outings and for educational and scientific purposes. The Taylors bought the property 30 years ago for its beauty and proximity to Winston-Salem. In order to carry their appreciation for the property forward they decided to donate it to PLC.
The property has great variety in a relatively small space. Hundred foot bluffs covered with large oak, pine and beech trees steeply slope through rhododendron thickets to the Little Yadkin. There is also an impressive stand of Eastern Hemlocks along the northern facing slopes of the river bluffs, including the Forsyth County Champion Hemlock. Other parts of the property are within the river’s flood plain.
In all, this gift protects about 3,000 feet along Little Yadkin River close to its confluence with the Yadkin River – a source of drinking water for Winston-Salem and millions of downstream users as it flows to the Atlantic Ocean.
“We love this place,” said Charles Taylor. “It has helped protect the Yadkin River and provided quiet animal and plant habitat for many years. Under PLC’s stewardship, this home for beautiful trees, plants and animals will continue to do so.”
Project funding provided by the landowner.
