Piedmont Regional Greenway Initiative
Guilford and Forsyth Counties
With funding support provided through the Piedmont Land Conservancy’s first Capital Campaign, “Saving Piedmont Lands”, PLC contracted with Greenways, Inc. to develop a master plan for a regional greenway to connect Guilford and Forsyth Counties through Triad Regional Park. The completed master plan proposes a 19-mile greenway corridor available for hikers and bicyclists that will connect into existing city and county greenway systems.
As the Piedmont Regional Greenway will serve multiple communities, the project has been broken down into smaller segments. The staff of Forsyth County, Guilford County, Winston-Salem, Kernersville, and Greensboro will each be leading the charge for these various segments while PLC will play a supporting role through the facilitation of partner meetings, raising public awareness and support for the project, and providing technical guidance as appropriate. While it will take several years to complete this project, its public benefits in terms of recreational and educational opportunities for Triad residents will be quantifiable as each segment is completed.

Lake Brandt Greenway & Weaver Bridge - .5 acres, Guilford County

Guilford Greene Homeowners Association. Donation of Conservation Easement.
In 1996, PLC in partnership with the City of Greensboro, Guilford County, and Starmount Corporation began construction of a greenway to help connect Guilford Courthouse National Military Park with Guilford County’s Bur-Mil Park. PLC’s facilitation of discussions between the homeowner’s association and City of Greensboro led to the donation of a greenway easement along an old railroad corridor to the City. Once the land was secured for the greenway, PLC continued working with our partners to clear the land for the trail and to raise the funds necessary to replace a burned out railroad trestle bridge with a 140-foot long pedestrian bridge over Lake Brandt.
Today Lake Brandt Greenway provides safe recreation in a natural setting within the city limits of Greensboro. The greenway and bridge are used by hundreds of walkers, joggers and bicyclists every day as a vital connection between several parks and 30 miles of lake trails. Additionally, Lake Brandt Greenway will serve as one of the endpoints of the proposed Piedmont Regional Greenway.
Project funding provided by the Weaver Foundation, Guilford County, City of Greensboro, and Guy M. Turner, Inc.
