Forever These Lands:
A Matter of Perspective
Piedmont Land Conservancy (PLC) and local plein air painting group Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society (POPS) collaborated on a new art exhibit which traveled throughout central North Carolina during 2010. This exhibit commemorated the 20th anniversary year of PLC and the 10th anniversary of POPS, and delivered a well-timed message of conservation and preservation of North Carolina's rapidly disappearing landscapes and natural areas.
“Forever These Lands: A Matter of Perspective” showcases photographs of PLC protected lands alongside plein air paintings created by POPS members – sometimes with different depictions of the same scene but often with very different perspectives on the land and its features. Subjects include family farms, rivers and watersheds, urban green space and unique natural areas.
PLC has several dozen beautiful photographs of farms, woodlands, wetlands, and other natural places, which it has preserved, protected, rescued, and saved for future generations. PLC's work saves flora and fauna, preserves the beauty of the land, helps maintain a healthy ecosystem, and provides opportunities for our citizens to enjoy the land and learn about it.
The artist members of POPS are all professional plein air painters, who are committed to capturing the beauty of our regional landscape in their paintings, and as such, are quite in tune with the goals and philosophy of PLC. The POPS artists visited, and continue to visit many of PLC's protected properties, to paint on-site and create original paintings in oil, pastel, and watercolor.
