Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway – Guilford County

The Atlantic & Yadkin (A&Y) Greenway is Greensboro’s only Rail-Trail and is named for the original rail line connecting Mt. Airy to Sanford, North Carolina. In 1996, PLC helped the City of Greensboro and Guilford County construct the original section of the trail connecting Guilford Courthouse National Military Park to Bur-Mil Park. PLC acquired necessary easements from landowners and raised funds from the Weaver Foundation to replace a burned-out railroad trestle with a 140-foot pedestrian bridge, which is named the H. Michael Weaver Bridge in honor of Mike Weaver, a local philanthropist.

With additional help from PLC, the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway now extends past Strawberry Road. PLC continues to work with the Town of Summerfield and Greensboro to extend the A&Y to Stokesdale. The Greenway provides safe recreation in a natural setting and is used by hundreds of walkers, joggers and bicyclists every day. The trail is a vital connection between several parks and 30 miles of lake trails. The Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway will help connect additional greenways in Greensboro to the planned Piedmont Greenway.
