Knight Brown Nature Day

Celebrate Earth Day a little early and spend a special morning at Knight Brown Nature Preserve to engage your family in the wonders of nature. Volunteers Hard at Work at Knight Brown Nature Preserve

It’s been a great week out at the Knight Brown Nature Preserve in Rockingham County! The trail system has gotten new, painted markers that are easier to see and more durable than the plastic markers that were used previously. Our hard working volunteers helped establish the new markers in just 2 half days of work! We had some wonderful warm and dry weather that made the workday a pleasant beginning to the coming Spring season. Thank you to our volunteers who gave their time and energy to make Knight Brown an even better place to get out and connect with nature! With the weather getting warmer, now’s the time to come out and see the new trail ...

Knight Brown Nature Preserve – Rockingham County

The Preserve has an informational kiosk at the trail head, handmade benches at various places, two bridges and picnic tables. The two ...

For the Love of the Land

by Barbara Haralson, PLC Hiker and Guest Blogger - I am not comfortable asking friends for donations, nor have I ever enjoyed hosting those parties where guests are expected to buy merchandise, so I went into the Piedmont Land Conservancy Hike-a-Thon with some reluctance.   I loved the idea of raising money for such an important organization, and I was excited to meet other people who enjoy hiking; it was just the fund raising part that concerned me.  Finally, I made the decision that I would raffle off a high end bird feeder in my retail store, Wild Birds Unlimited, and wouldn’t have to ask people for donations.   On November 11th I made the ...

Summer Fun, Outdoors!

By PLC Education & Outreach Coordinator, Lynne Dardanell — As we step into August and begin the final countdown to the end of summer (which is often unofficially over when school begins, a college semester starts, or even Labor Day weekend), we should be asking ourselves - have we spent enough time outside? Have we experienced nature, even just one iota. Have we taken the appropriate breaks from our devices, or even our vices (and perhaps they are one and the same). Have we not only heard the crickets, the bullfrogs, and the mourning doves - but listened, actually listened - to their songs? Have we inhaled the scent of fresh-cut grass, ...

Nature Preserve Field Trip Fun

by PLC Legal Intern Paula (Marie) Booth: Over the course of the last two weeks I had the opportunity to participate in field trips with 3rd and 8th graders at PLC’s Knight Brown Nature Preserve. The preserve is a beautiful 190-acre piece of property that has three wonderful hiking trails. Each trail had stations set up and the kids hiked from one station to the next. They had the opportunity to learn about water quality, ecosystems, and the different species they encountered on their hike. I had the chance to refresh my memory and also learn a few new things. The best part was watching young children and pre-teens react the same way to the ...

Hikes

One of PLC’s priorities is to protect places that can help connect people to nature, balancing our increasingly indoor, urban lives with the benefits and fun of being outside for all ages. Benefitting health through outdoor recreation – fishing, hiking, birding, canoeing/kayaking, and quiet enjoyment, access to open space and natural areas is critical for our region’s future, and PLC plays an important role in making these types of places available. Here are 5 hand-picked areas perfect for  hiking. Each trail has a connection to a PLC conservation project. Going to check them out? Tag us on Instagram (@piedmontland) and Facebook. Use the ...

Why I Love My Job

By Kalen Kingsbury - PLC's Associate Director - After the dreary start to November, it's nice to look back on these beautiful October days. The crisp fall weather with low humidity and temps in the low 70s made it an ideal time to be outside in Piedmont NC. I’m lucky to have a job that sometimes requires me to do just that. Here are a few photos from my October "out of the office" but working time. Though not technically required for work, I was on my way back to the office from a meeting and I passed a hiking area I’ve been wanting to see for over a year.  The Shallow Ford Natural Area on Gerringer Mill Road in Alamance County is ...
