Connecting People to Nature

Bandera Farms Park

A Regional Conservation and Recreation Collaboration

Bandera Farms Park is a 120-acre site located in Summerfield currently under construction (Summer-Fall 2026) to become a nature-based and equestrian-focused regional park in a rapidly growing area of Guilford County that will serve a variety of users with

  • a 1-mile segment of the Piedmont Greenway,
  • a 4.5-mile network of dedicated horse trails open to pedestrians as well,
  • an adventure playground,
  • and a picnic shelter and restrooms.

The property was initially acquired by Piedmont Land Conservancy in 2020 through a partnership with Guilford County, the City of Greensboro, and the towns of Oak Ridge and Summerfield. The Town of Summerfield now owns the site, which is forever protected by a conservation easement held by PLC.

Park Site Overview

The new park will include designated parking areas for the two core zones of the park. The greenway will run parallel to the horse trails, starting with a natural surface and eventually being paved as part of the full greenway buildout.

The conceptual park design was developed by Destination by Design. Pond is managing engineering design and construction. Bar Construction and Benchmark Trails are building the park.

The park is scheduled to be completed by November 2026.

Trailheads Overview

Located along Reedy Fork Creek, the property protects Greensboro’s drinking water supply.

This project marks the first time all four local governments have partnered on a joint conservation and recreation initiative. It serves as a powerful example of watershed collaboration and embodies the principles of a One Water approach—promoting shared stewardship of water resources and land preservation.

Piedmont Land Conservancy helped secure substantial grant support for Bandera Farms Park, including:

  • $2.3 million – Guilford County
  • $500,000 – North Carolina Great Trails State Program
  • $500,000 – Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)
  • $500,000 – North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF)
  • $100,000 – Recreational Trails Program (RTP)
  • $50,000 – NC Horse Council
  • $38,500 – Oak Ridge Community Center
