NATURE PRESERVE MANAGER
Reports To: Executive Director
Works Primarily With: Executive Director, Stewardship Director, Legacy Trails Coordinator, Conservation Planner, Development Director and Land Protection Staff Members, Volunteers
Position Summary:
The Nature Preserve Manager is a full-time position responsible for the management and development of PLC’s fee-simple properties designated as nature preserves. This is a full-time position that reports to the Executive Director.
Status of PLC's Nature Preserves:
PLC’s current nature preserves include:
- Knight Brown Preserve – Rockingham County, 185 acres
- Caraway Creek Preserve – Randolph County, 160 acres
- Bashavia Creek Preserve – Forsyth County, 138 acres
- Mitchell River Preserve – Surry County, 311 acres
Additional preserves are envisioned throughout the region with a strategic planning goal of having at least one preserve in each of PLC’s nine counties.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
- Develop short and long-term management plans for all preserves.
- Coordinate PLC staff, volunteers and contractors to construct trails, parking areas, kiosks, signage and other amenities on the properties.
- Improve wildlife habitat and native plant populations on the properties.
- Gather expert input on management of trails, agriculture, forestry, wildlife etc. on the properties.
- Assist land protection staff with ongoing land acquisition efforts for future nature preserves.
- Create biological inventories of current and future nature preserves.
- Plan and lead PLC outings on preserves and other properties as may be possible.
- Assist with conservation education and outreach to community.
Essential Job Requirements:
Education: Minimum – Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, agriculture, natural resource management, forestry, botany or similar degree.
Experience: 5+ years of land management experience preferred.
Required Skills:
- A personal commitment to the mission of Piedmont Land Conservancy.
- A strong understanding of Piedmont North Carolina’s wildlife, plants, streams, invasive species, agricultural practices and history.
- Excellent team member – ability to work with others, respect for all team members and ability to foster and maintain an enjoyable, rewarding and productive workplace.
- People skills – must have an ability to interact with individuals from different backgrounds, ages and socio-economic levels in a manner that positively reflects the values of PLC.
- Self-motivation – comfortable working independently on multiple projects simultaneously, strong organizational and time management skills, a commitment to accuracy and integrity in all aspects of the job.
- Computer skills – basic computer skills including Microsoft office, online mapping and other software as may be needed.
- Field work – secure working outdoors throughout all four seasons.
