Conservation Tools

Conservation Easements – Conservation easements are our most popular preservation method for landowners, which is a legal contract between a landowner and PLC describing activities that may take place on a property in order to protect the land’s conservation values. Landowners continue to own, use and live on the land.

Land Donations – PLC can accept donations of property with significant conservation values for preservation, or donations of land for resale to provide funding for other conservation projects. Donations of land and conservation easements offer landowners tax benefits.

Land Purchases – Occasionally, for significant tracts, PLC may purchase conservation lands for permanent protection.

Land Management – Often, PLC will transfer properties owned to a state or local agency for permanent management. However, we own and manage several nature preserves, most notably the Knight Brown Nature Preserve in Rockingham County.
